Number of ratings: 1
The U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) represents the United States in national and international activities related to the broad science of mechanics and serves as the U.S. adhering body to the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). It is organised under the National Academies and coordinates national meetings, fellowships, and outreach; every few years it organises a U.S. National Congress on Theoretical & Applied Mechanics to bring together researchers from theoretical, experimental and computational mechanics across academia, government and industry. Typical participants include mechanicians from mechanical, civil and related engineering disciplines, applied mathematicians, and allied scientists; the committee also solicits host proposals for future congresses.

It was a nice conference for people in mechanical engineering. For me, with a background in biomedical engineering and a mix of mechanical engineering, the application of mechanics to the body was interesting. But compared to other conferences in my field, it wasn’t that helpful because I couldn’t make many connections—most attendees were in theoretical and applied mechanics. The booths and companies there were also mostly focused on general mechanics, not related to bio or healthcare.

Ways to improve the conference: Having more companies attend would help students and scientists make more connections and learn what’s going on in the industry. It would also be great to have more sessions focused on biomechanics and bioengineering—especially since different engineering fields are becoming more multidisciplinary.07:08 PM
